The holiday season is a time for relaxation and celebration, but dental emergencies can happen at the most inconvenient times. Whether it’s a toothache, a broken tooth, or a lost filling, it’s important to know what to do if a dental emergency arises during the holidays.

1. Recognising a Dental Emergency
Not every dental problem requires immediate attention, but some issues should be addressed right away to prevent further complications. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe toothache or pain that won’t go away
  • A broken or chipped tooth
  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Swelling in your mouth or face

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to act quickly.

2. What to Do If You Have a Toothache
Toothaches can range from mild discomfort to severe pain. If you have a toothache during the holidays, start by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter pain relief can help manage the pain until you can visit us. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, as this can cause irritation.

3. What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out
If a tooth is knocked out, it’s crucial to act fast. Gently rinse the tooth with water (without scrubbing) and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If that’s not an option, keep the tooth moist by placing it in a container of milk or holding it between your cheek and gums until you can visit us.

4. What to Do If a Crown or Filling Is Lost
A lost crown or filling can leave your tooth vulnerable to further damage. Over-the-counter dental cement can temporarily replace the crown or filling until you can visit us. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth to prevent further damage.
