Why Can a Tooth Hurt When You Bite Down but Not at Any Other Time?
4 October 2026
Your teeth might look like completely fixed structures, but your mouth is far more dynamic than it appears.
Teeth sit within living bone, supported by ligaments, gums and surrounding tissues. They’re constantly responding to pressure from chewing, your tongue, your lips and neighbouring teeth.
When something changes, the rest of your mouth often responds.
Here are seven fascinating ways your teeth can adapt over time.
1. Teeth Can Move Into Empty Spaces
If a tooth is lost, the space doesn’t necessarily remain exactly the same forever.
Neighbouring teeth can gradually tilt or drift towards the gap.
The tooth directly opposite the missing tooth may also begin to move because it no longer has its usual biting partner.
These changes generally happen gradually, so you may not notice them taking place.
2. Teeth Respond to Constant Pressure
Orthodontic treatment works because teeth respond to carefully controlled pressure.
Braces and clear aligners apply gentle forces that encourage changes in the bone around the tooth, allowing it to gradually move into a new position.
But orthodontic appliances aren’t the only source of pressure.
Your lips, cheeks and tongue also apply small forces to your teeth every day.
The balance between these forces helps influence where teeth sit.
3. Your Bite Adjusts as Teeth Wear
Teeth naturally experience some wear throughout life.
Every meal involves tooth surfaces contacting food and, at times, each other.
For most people, this process is extremely gradual.
The way the upper and lower teeth meet can subtly change as biting surfaces wear and the mouth adapts.
Excessive grinding, however, can accelerate this process considerably and may result in noticeably flattened or shortened teeth.
4. Teeth Can Continue to Erupt
We usually think of eruption as something that happens only when we’re children.
But teeth maintain the ability to make small positional changes throughout life.
If a tooth loses contact with the tooth opposite it, for example, it may gradually move further into the space.
This is known as over-eruption.
It’s one reason replacing a missing tooth can sometimes be about more than simply filling a visible gap.
5. Teeth Can Shift After Orthodontic Treatment
Finished your braces or clear aligners years ago?
Your teeth still aren’t frozen permanently in that position.
Teeth have a tendency to move throughout life, which is why retainers play such an important role after orthodontic treatment.
Changes in the surrounding bone and tissues, normal ageing and everyday forces within the mouth can all contribute to gradual movement.
This can happen even many years after treatment.
6. Your Mouth Adjusts to Dental Restorations
When you receive a filling, crown or other restoration, it becomes part of your bite.
At first, your tongue may constantly find it.
It can feel enormous simply because something is different.
Over time, your brain generally becomes accustomed to the restoration and you stop noticing it.
Your chewing patterns can also adjust slightly as you become used to the restored tooth.
However, a restoration that consistently feels too high or uncomfortable when biting isn’t something you should simply force yourself to tolerate. Come back and let us know so we can check it.
7. Your Brain Adapts Too
Perhaps one of the most fascinating parts of dental adaptation doesn’t happen in the teeth at all.
It happens in your brain.
Your mouth has an extraordinary sensory system capable of detecting tiny changes.
When something changes, your tongue may investigate it constantly at first. Think about how enormous a tiny chip in a tooth can feel when your tongue finds it.
After a while, your brain can become accustomed to many harmless changes and they fade into the background.
This is why a new restoration can feel strange on day one but completely normal shortly afterwards.
Your Mouth Is Constantly Changing
Your teeth are part of a living, changing system.
Some adaptation is completely normal. Other changes can create problems if teeth move into unfavourable positions, become excessively worn or stop meeting correctly.
One of the most useful things you can do is pay attention to changes in your own mouth.
A new gap, increasing crowding, a tooth that seems to have moved or a bite that suddenly feels different is worth mentioning.
If you’ve noticed that your teeth don’t seem to sit where they used to, come and visit us. We can compare what you’re noticing with the overall health and position of your teeth and determine whether it’s simply a normal change or something that needs attention.
